English wainscoting is the division of a wall with moldings that create regular frames, known as panels. Modeling takes a few minutes, since it's just ordinary rectangles turned into 3D profiles, but the vast majority of the time is spent preparing the proper profiles and determining proportions, which with the classic Follow Me tool can be a real test of patience. In this article, I break the topic down into its basic parts and show you how to create this type of decoration in SketchUp.

    At what height should the cap molding be placed in English wainscoting?

    The first decision concerns the coverage: whether the paneling covers the entire wall or only its lower part. The wainscot option is more common and less risky, as it does not overwhelm the room.

    The classic rule says that wainscoting occupies roughly one third of the wall height. With a 250 cm ceiling that gives 83 cm, with 270 cm exactly 90 cm, and with three meters exactly one meter. In practice, the cap molding is usually installed between 85-100 cm, and this is no coincidence, as chair backs rest at that height. This decoration originally protected the wall from chair backs.

    In tall interiors, a single row of frames looks sparse, as two meters of empty wall remain directly above it. In that case, a double arrangement works better.

    Before determining the height, also check the windowsills and sockets. A cap molding at 90 cm can cut through a low-set window or hit a socket directly above the countertop.

    How to arrange English molding frames on the wall?

    From the floor and ceiling, the panel should be set back by 10-15 cm, measured from the top edge of the baseboard (not from the floor itself). From the wall corner, you typically leave 10-12 cm on each side. The gaps between adjacent frames range from 8-12 cm. In a double arrangement, where one field has a frame within a frame, the inner frame is made from a narrower profile, leaving 5-8 cm between them.

    Let’s calculate this on a 400 cm wide wall, with corner margins of 12 cm and gaps of 10 cm. Four fields give panels 86.5 cm wide. Five fields are 67 cm, and six only 54 cm.

    The height comes from the wainscot. With a division at 90 cm, subtract the baseboard, say 10 cm, and the margins above it and below the cap molding, about 22 cm in total. That leaves 58 cm.

    Only now does it become clear what it’s all about. Four fields give a panel of 86.5 × 58 cm, which reads clearly as horizontal. Five fields is 67 × 58. Six fields gives 54 × 58, and the panel is perceived as vertical, though very close to a square. So the number of fields is not a decision about density, but about the proportions of a single frame.

    Which wainscoting layouts work best?

    The classic and safest choice. One level of frames, one cap molding, smooth wall above. It suits the dining room, bedroom, and hallway, forgives minor wall irregularities, and is the easiest to plan to avoid fittings.

    Frame within a frame

    Works where the wall is tall and a single division gets lost in the void. It looks rich but uses twice as much molding and requires twice the precision.

    Vertical battens at an even rhythm

    The most contemporary variant, without closed frames. The profiles run from the baseboard to the cap molding or all the way to the ceiling, evenly spaced across the entire width. In the model it is the simplest layout, because you only need one segment and multiple copies. It works well behind the headboard and on the TV wall.

    How to plan English wainscoting in SketchUp?

    Work on the flat plane of the wall, inside a separate group dedicated to the paneling, so that the new geometry does not stick to the rest of the room.

    Start with guide lines. Using the Tape Measure tool, measure the margin from the floor, from the ceiling, and from both corners, then the height of the top and bottom edges of the frames. You then have a ready grid.

    Now the most enjoyable part. Draw the first panel at the left corner, select it, switch to the Move tool, press Ctrl and copy the rectangle to the position of the last frame. Immediately after that, without clicking anywhere else, with the Move tool still active, type /3 on the keyboard and press Enter. SketchUp will divide that distance into three equal parts and place the two missing panels in between. The rule is simple: type a number one less than the number of fields you want to get.

    What remains is fitting to the actual wall. If an outlet, switch, or thermostat falls in a field, move the division so that the fitting lands in the gap between frames. At a wall with doors, align the panel edges with the door frame.

    How to turn rectangles into real 3D moldings?

    Rectangles alone are not paneling yet. You need to give them a real cross-section.

    The default tool for this type of transformation in SketchUp is "Follow Me". You draw the molding profile, position it perpendicular in the middle of the frame, select the perimeter of the rectangle, and drag the profile.     When is it better to skip English wainscoting?

    With a ceiling below 250 cm, wainscoting divides an already low wall strip, making the room feel even lower. In a narrow hallway, frames on both walls turn the passage into a tunnel. A wall densely built with openings—door, window, and passage on the same plane—usually does not leave room for a regular division, and an irregular one looks accidental.

The key to success is selecting the wainscot dimensions and field divisions so that each panel has proportions suited to the character of the interior. This requires thought and constant testing of different variants.
